What is a DXF file?

The DXF format is a standard plan exchange format. It was proposed in 1982 by Autodesk (the company that made AutoCAD) so that the plans produced with their software could be read by other software and the other way round. Today we use this type of file to exchange 2D plans (flat). There is another file type for 3D file exchange: the .STP format.
